What is Fire Stopping?
Fire stopping refers to the sealing of service penetrations and voids in walls, ceilings and floors using tested and approved fire-resistant materials. Its primary role is to restore the fire-resistance rating of a compartment once it’s been breached for cabling, piping or ductwork.
By doing so, fire stopping slows the spread of fire and smoke, giving occupants time to escape and enabling emergency services to enter the building safely.
Fire Barrier and Curtain Installation
Norfire supplies and installs a wide range of fire barriers and curtains. These include flexible, lightweight fire curtain systems designed for up to 120 minutes of fire protection, and fire barriers used to compartmentalise roof and ceiling voids.
All installations are carried out to manufacturer instructions and in line with test data, ensuring performance integrity.
Intumescent Sealants and Pipe Collars
We also install intumescent sealants and pipe collars to seal gaps around penetrations and structural joints. These materials expand when exposed to heat, effectively blocking fire and smoke from moving between compartments.
All products we use are tested to the highest standards and offer up to four hours of fire resistance.
Maintenance and Compliance
Just like other fire safety measures, fire stopping requires ongoing inspection and maintenance. Norfire can carry out scheduled fire stopping surveys, providing detailed reports and remediation work to keep your property compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and current Building Regulations.
Fire stopping is a critical element of passive fire protection and a legal requirement under UK fire safety regulations.
